Ken Friedman | Flux Clippings

Ken Friedman
Flux Clippings
New York City, USA: Fluxus, circa 1968
12 x 9.3 x 1.3 cm
Edition size unknown

When Friedman first proposed Flux Clippings to George Maciunas, he received an enthusiastic reply: “I like that very much, the best of all you have done. Try to fit into the small plastic box with 7 compartments” (letter dated Friday November 23rd, 1966). Three months later he wrote “for ‘clippings’ label I got a nice engraving of guillotine’, promising to start work on the project as soon as he had left his job. A Fluxus newsletter a year later confirmed the project was still forthcoming.

The work was apparently to include the expected newspaper clippings about Fluxus events, but also hair and nail clippings. According to an interview between Friedman and Jon Hendricks, Maciunas begun also using calluses and bunions, which made the superstitious Friedman uncomfortable.
